Why Learn A Language?

Why learn a language? -If you are going to be traveling abroad, one of the most daunting tasks for most people is trying to ensure that they can communicate with the locals. Even though there are many people in the world who speak English, the fact is that knowing the local language can be a tremendous benefit even if you are just planning to travel to a different country for only a few short days.

Why learn a new language? – It takes you off the beaten path

Knowing the language and how to express yourself to the people who live there opens up a world of new opportunities for you. If you are interested in just spending time in your hotel, only talking to tour guides, eating at some of the better known fast food chains, and only watching CNN if you are resting in your hotel – then English is going to do just fine. Most tourist attractions do cater to those people who solely speak English, and you can go specific areas of most countries that cater solely to tourists. However, part of the charm of going on vacation elsewhere is the fact that you are able to experience new things, do you really want to travel 3000 miles just to eat a McDonalds hamburger?

Why learn a second language? – It allows you to immerse yourself

Knowing the language allows you to explore more of the culture that the country has to offer, it allows you to interact with people who may not be fluent in English. It allows you to meet the ‘average’ person in the country you are visiting rather than just the tour guide or waiter. Some people are worried about becoming lost and not being able to find someone who speaks English to help them back on their way. This not only causes them to stay near the places they have already seen, but can also mean that they are missing out on some of the amazing sights and sounds your location has to offer.

Why learn a foreign language? – It improves the perception of others

In all honesty, if someone came to your hometown and addressed you in their native tongue that you did not understand you may feel frustrated and quickly wonder why these people come over to where you live without understanding the language. The truth is that this exactly what most tourists do. You will quickly find that the local population appreciates the fact that you are making an effort to speak their language even if you do make a few mistakes every now and again.

Learning a new language can take time, but with so many benefits to be had it only makes sense that you try and expand your knowledge base and try to learn a new language if you do decide to travel to a different country.
